From the writer: “This was me taking a step towards understanding that people aren’t the fantasies you create about them.”
Just a dream
in my dream, you were holding me
your rough, calloused hands gently
held my cheeks as if i were made of
glass and with one wrong move,
you could shatter me.
in my dream, you were perfect
you were funny, but never over-stepped
the boundaries i had put up so long ago
you were kind, but never too kind
to avoid people walking over you.
in my dream, she was not there and
your heart did not belong to her
you did not sing her praises at every opportunity
you did not tell me about how pretty she was
or how much you wished she was yours.
in my dream, you told me you’d
choose me over everyone and anything
you told me that even though your heart had been broken
more times than what you could count,
even though it’s barely being held together by a delicate string,
you’d still give it to me.
and in that moment
i believed you,
everything was okay.
but it was just a dream .
